The SETI Institute’s Artist in Residence (AIR) program announced the shortlist for its Beyond Silos STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Education residency. This new SETI AIR program residency supports transdisciplinary pedagogy at the intersection of art and science, positioning art and creative practice as an integral component to teaching and learning in the STEAM Education framework. Areas of research include interdisciplinary curriculum development, accessible learning strategies, digital technology integration, science literacy, and design thinking.
On September 18, 2024, the SETI AIR program invited art educators whose pedagogical practice centres on STEAM Education to submit first-round applications to be considered for the Beyond Silos shortlist. The Open Call received submissions from all over the world, including New Zealand, Argentina, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, and the USA. “The disciplinary variety of applicants is remarkable,” said SETI AIR program Director Bettina Forget. “We have received submissions from educators who are graphic novelists, musicians, BioArtists, media artists, and videographers. All of them have experience in developing educational projects that interweave art and science; some have even partnered with NASA and the European Space Agency. This is a fantastic group of educators, and I look forward to round two of the application process.”

The shortlisted educators will now submit detailed STEAM Education project proposals for consideration. The projects will be aimed at K-12 learners and may be a curriculum, a series of workshops, or a summer camp project. The research resulting from this residency will be made accessible to the public through the publication of an article in a journal, magazine, and/or online resource.
The 18-month Beyond Silos residency comes with a stipend of $14,000.
The winner of the residency will be announced on March 1, 2025.
