Professor Lyons’ primary research interests include marine and lacustrine biogeochemistry, astrobiology, geobiology, ancient climate, co-evolution of Earth’s early life and environments, and the search for life beyond our solar system. He is Director of the UCR Alternative Earths Astrobiology Center and team leader of a previous NAI team and a current ICAR award. Both are devoted to using the 4+ billion years of persistent habitability on a dynamic early Earth to guide NASA’s mission-specific search for life on distant worlds. Lyons is also a co-leader and steering committee member of the PCE3 and LIFE RCNs, respectively. For VPL, Professor Lyons contributes through his expertise in Earth history—specifically the evolution of early oceans and atmospheres, associated co-evolving life, and the potential for remotely detectable atmospheric biosignatures over time. He also coordinates inter-team collaborations and bridge building among the NASA RCNs.
