Biography
Dr. Gillon has expertise in the detection and study of transiting exoplanets, with a particular focus on small planets in orbit around red dwarfs. In 2007, he led the detection of the transit of the first ‘exo-Neptune’ and the first exoplanet transiting a M-dwarf. He also co-led the first measurement of the thermal emission of a ‘super-Earth’ and the detection of the nearest transiting rocky exoplanets. In 2017, he led the discovery of the TRAPPIST-1 system composed of seven temperate Earth-sized planets in orbit around a nearby ultracool dwarf. He is PI of the exoplanet part of the TRAPPIST project, and PI of the SPECULOOS exoplanet search. He chairs with Prof. V. Meadows the TRAPPIST-1 JWST Community Initiative. For VPL, Dr. Gillon searches for potentially habitable exoplanets well-suited for detailed atmospheric characterization around the nearest ultracool dwarf stars. He also uses data obtained by JWST and other astronomical facilities to try to detect and to characterize atmospheres around the TRAPPIST-1, SPECULOOS, and other temperate rocky planets.
