Professor Shkolnik is a pioneer in the field of star-planet interaction. She has spent the past two decades studying the impact that stars have on their planets and vice versa. She is the PI of several large observing programs to characterize the UV emission from exoplanet host stars, focusing particularly on low-mass stars, the dominant hosts of terrestrial, habitable zone planets. Professor Shkolnik is also the PI of the NASA-funded SPARCS space mission, an upcoming small satellite aimed at monitoring low-mass stars for UV flares. For VPL, Professor Shkolnik guides the characterization of the exoplanet host stars, paying particular attention to the high-energy radiation environment of the exoplanets due to incident ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray stellar photons.
